Rice@BC   [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

My friends at the Cardinal Newman Society include Rice on a list of speakers at Catholic university commencements this spring they are protesting. Some on their list are deeply depressing to any Catholic not ashamed to be Catholic...the message schools are sending in their choices.

I'm disappointed that Ohio Dominican, for instance, has Church dissenter Sr. Joan Chittester speaking. I didn't go to Ohio Dominican, but the sisters from there run the high school I went to, so I feel tied.

But I also notice that the list seems better than in previous years—it's usually a who's who of pro-abortion Catholics. That's a credit to the Cardinal Newman Society that's been keeping an eye on Catholic schools for years.

And on the Condi Rice thing...yes she's described herself as moderately pro-choice, but my impression has always been it's just not an issue for her. If she were in any way and advocate, that would be one thing... I don't think BC is compromising any fundamental values by having her speak.
